How these programs work

RRSP Home Buyers' Plan (HBP): The HBP allows you to withdraw up to $60,000 (per person) from your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSPs) to buy or build a qualifying home for yourself. A couple can withdraw up to $120,000. You have 15 years to repay the amount back into your RRSP, and repayments start the second year after the year you first withdrew funds.

First-Time Home Buyer Incentive (FTHBI): This program offers 5% or 10% of the home's purchase price to put toward a down payment. It's a shared-equity mortgage with the Government of Canada. To be eligible, your qualifying household income must be $120,000 or less ($150,000 for Toronto, Vancouver, or Victoria), and the total borrowing is limited to 4 times your qualifying income (4.5 times in Toronto, Vancouver, or Victoria).
